Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam

One of the more tragic characters in Amsterdam's long history was Vincent Van Gogh - a gifted artist who was only beginning to find his genius when he ended his own life. After failing in various professions, he turned to art and quickly developed his skills over a 10 year career. The Van Gogh Museum allows you to consider his works from his earliest sketches and drawings through his greatest works, completed in the months before his death. In addition to the paintings, the museum's collection includes nearly 500 sketches, drawings and personal writings. The gallery has been categorized chronologically, and it is easy to see the influences which broadened and matured the artist. In one remarkable room all the works from the final period of his life are displayed on one wall. Audio tours and computer kiosks allow you to consider each of works at your own pace.
