Church of the Sacred Family Barcelona

The experienced traveler is not surprised to find a historic building being renovated, or even remodeled; but to find a building that was begun in 1883 and still in the original construction phase is a rarity, indeed. The Church of the Sacred Family is unusual for a number of reasons - its 130 year construction period just being the start. Antoni Gaudi, the famed Modernist Architect wanted a cathedral that rivaled the ancient churches of Europe, yet would stand in stark contrast to them. He has succeeded. Nothing can prepare you for the sheer enormity building. Every external wall is a work of art. Much of the façade is still unfinished, as is the inside. Although the building is now used for worship services, there is little of interest to a visitor in the interior of the cathedral. However, you will want to take advantage of the spectacular view afforded by the tower. You can pay to ride the elevator, but you will wait to do so. If you're in the shape for it, it is better to take the stairs. Either way, the view is fantastic.
