Gothic Quarter Barcelona

One of the most fascinating and architecturally interesting neighborhoods in Barcelona is the Barri Gotic or the Gothic Quarter. Originally an ancient fortified Roman village, little has changed here over the centuries. The maze of haphazardly planned narrow streets are sure to get you lost, but don't worry - it seems that everything eventually leads to the Cathedral de la Seu. Completed in 1450, the Gothic cathedral is lit only by votive candles and streaks of sun when it passes overhead. The cloister, the ribbed vaults, the pulpit and choir stalls are the most remarkable artistic features. As you make your way through the neighborhood you will stumble over bits of history and culture at nearly every turn: palaces, cathedrals, ancient military installations and wonderful old parks and squares. If you can visit on a Sunday, be sure to join the folk dances at Plaza de St. Jaume, in front of the cathedral. You'll be joining in a tradition that is nearly 600 years old, in a setting that has remained largely unchanged over the centuries.
