For most of its history Berlin has been busy rebuilding and redefining itself. Long before the wall went up this has been a city that is no stranger to turmoil. Its rebirth as the capital of Germany and its longstanding position as a center of culture and political power make Berlin one of the most interesting travel destinations in Europe. Berlin is well accustomed to guests, so finding a hotel in Berlin will not be a problem. Berlin hotels offer a wide variety of amenities and price ranges.
You'll have plenty to see and do here. Memorable sites include the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, the Memorial Church and Kurfurstendamm, Charlottenburg Palace, and the Russian Memorial in Treptower Park. Take time to visit the Pergamon Museum with its famous altar. See the work of the Old Masters at the Gemaldegalerie, or 19th century artists at the Alte Nationalgalerie. If you prefer Modern art, both the the Neue Nationalgalerie and Hamburger Bahnhof will be sure to please. The Checkpoint Charlie museum provides a fascinating look back at "The Wall".
Like most European cities, there are plenty of great places for strolling away a lazy afternoon: Visit Unter den Linden or the trendy Oranienburger Strasse and Hackescher Markt areas. Explore the vast Tiergarten or go window shopping along Friedrichstrasse or Kurfurstendamm. The Zoological Garden is Germany's oldest zoo and the largest in the world.
Berlin takes a back seat to no one in cultural offerings. The historic Staatsoper Unter den Linden is the premier Opera House in the city, but there are several other places to experience operatic and dramatic performances. Berlin is blessed with several world class musical groups as well. The Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra calls the Konzerthaus Berlin home, although you can catch performances of the Philharmonic and touring orchestras there as well.
As you might expect, Berlin offers an adrenaline rush of nightlife with over 6000 cabarets, bars, dance clubs and music halls. You will have no trouble finding something that suits your taste in music - or in beverage. Berlin is the only city in Europe without an official closing time.
Berlin continues to grow and to define itself. That isn't to say that there is anything wrong with the city as it is today. But Berlin seems addicted to rediscovery. And for the tourist, that means there is always something new to experience.
