Budapest, Hungary's capital city has had a very tumultuous history that has caused major upheavals but the city has maintained its rich culture and is thus often referred to as the 'Paris of Eastern Europe'. Budapest is a popular tourist centre and there are approximately 300 big and small hotels in Budapest, offering discount to luxury accommodation. A Budapest hotel can cost you from as cheap as US $50 dollars a night to very expensive. Budapest hotels availability can be checked online, the hotels can get quite crowded during the tourist season and one would need to book well in advance. A hotel in Budapest is usually easily available during off-season months.

Budapest has created for itself an interesting identity, of a city steeped in western luxury yet equally strongly entrenched in rich Hungarian tradition. The city is located along a gentle curve of the River Danube. It is well planned with broad streets, a lot of greenery and amazing bathhouses everywhere. These bathhouses seem to be a way of life here. Most of Budapest was built in during the 19th century and the city has a distinct feel of that period. Budapest is sunny throughout the year and can be visited anytime though spring and autumn are the best.

The Castle District on Castle Hill is where you'll be able to see many important monuments, museums, City Park, or Varosliget. Other places that one must see in Budapest are the Hosok tere (Heroes' Square), the Millenary Monument, Museum of Fine Arts, the zoo, and the Szechenyi Bath. The Gellert Hill, and Kiraly Baths, provides a perfect place to relax after a tiring day. In the midst of the city you will find the Opera House, whose architecture itself is a sight to behold. Its awesome interiors diminish the most spectacular of performances. To experience the true feel of the city, spending an evening in the Opera House is a must.

Around Budapest, there are many places not to miss such as the Eger, a most beautiful and ornate town against the Northern Uplands. Eger is also the place from where the well known Egri Bikaver (Eger Bull's Blood) wine comes from. Also there is Veszprem, Obuda with its Roman ruins, museums, and the Roman Military Amphitheatre. Budapest is a city well spread out and the best way to go sightseeing is by bicycle. If you feel indulgent, you should visit one of the many baths and savour the different kinds of wines available here.

Budapest's airport has been renovated, a relief from the chaotic 1970's terminal and is serviced by over three dozen international airlines. The bus is also a popular means of getting to Budapest. The Hungarian State Railway (MAV) links to the European rail network, with different stations handling various destinations. Most international trains arrive at and leave from Keleti station. Budapest has an ageing but safe, inexpensive and efficient public transport system, HEV (green trains), yellow trams, red trolleybuses and blue buses.
