Victoria Peak Hong Kong
The most enduring - and visible - attraction on the island is Victoria Peak. This 1805 ft. mountain overlooks the west side of Hong Kong Island and has the oldest transportation and most unusual building in Hong Kong. Originally home to Hong Kong's elite, today Victoria Peak is a world-renowned scenic destination. The best access to the peak is via the Peak Tram, a funicular railway that carves a steep 373-meter (about 1224 feet) swathe up the lush hillside. Since its origination in 1888 the tram has served the city well. The 1400 meters (4592 feet) trek takes about 7 minutes. The steepest incline, at May Road, is 27 degrees to the horizon. The Peak Tram is both quick and safe, because it is run on a computerized electric drive system, which is automatically checked before every trip. At the top of the mountain Peak Tram pulls into the Peak Tower, the icon of Hong Kong. With an elevation of over 396 meters (about 1299 feet) the tower offers a commanding view of the spectacular Victoria Harbor, Kowloon and the New Territories. The tower also features a number of dining and entertainment options.
