Wong Tai Sin Temple Hong Kong
Wong Tai Sin Temple is the most celebrated Taoist ancestral temple in Hong Kong. It is a bit off the beaten track, on the island of Kowloon, but well worth the effort to find it. The temple is an excellent example of a traditional Chinese temple. It features red pillars, a golden roof adorned with blue friezes, yellow latticework and multi-colored carvings. On the main altar of the temple stands the painting of Wong Tai Sin; originally brought to Hong Kong from Guangdong province in 1915 and officially moved to this temple site in 1921. Legend says the Wong Tai Sin was a shepherd boy that was taught the powers of healing by an immortal. He traveled widely helping all those who asked of him. Today, this is a popular spot with tourists and locals alike. Most of Hong Kong's residents come to gain advice and insight into the future from the ever-present soothsayers. The temple has two gardens which offer a chance for reflection away from the bustle of the temple itself.
