Las Vegas Glitter Gulch

Las Vegas - at least the Las Vegas the world knows - was born on Fremont Street or "Glitter Gulch". Over the years, The Strip has become the focal point of the city and Fremont Street was neglected, allowing it to decay. Recently, the city fathers have begun rebuilding Glitter Gulch and have created the Freemont Street Experience. Now it is Las Vegas' premier "family-friendly" environment. What had become an unseemly neighborhood has been renovated into a safe environment for tourist families who are looking for lights beyond the casinos. The result is a 5-block pedestrian mall covered with a neon canopy and lined with big-screen theaters, retail shopping and eateries that range from hot dog stands to elegant restaurants. A neat feature of the area is the reappearance of the old casino signs which once lined Glitter Gulch. Many of them have been refurbished and installed along the street. Others are still laying in a neon "graveyard" waiting to be restored to their original luster and added to the collection.
