London offers some of the best classical music in the world, and for decades the entire world had been indebted to London for the rich wealth of classical music that it has produced. No city rivals London for the quality and quantity of recordings that it has produced over the years. Unlike most major cities which boast of symphony orchestra or two, London has five in addition to a number of lesser-known groups.
The London Symphony Orchestra focuses on traditional classics and performs at the Barbican Centre. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is the busiest in the city. It is difficult to secure tickets to heir major concert series; but their evening concerts, broadcast live from the Maida Vale studios are free. Contact the BBC for details about attending one of these performances which are known for their spontaneity.
No one has recorded more than the Royal Philharmonic. You can hear them live at Royal Festival Hall. The London Sinfonietta is a smaller orchestra with an outstanding reputation for its contemporary and British repertoire. And finally, the Philharmonic, the most traditional of the orchestras in London, splits time between London and Paris.
