Comprised primarily of Miami business magnate Mitchell Wolfson Jr.'s remarkable 70,000-item collection of American and European decorative art works and crafts from the late 19th to early 20th century, the Wolfsonian gives Miami Beach an outstanding and unique museum, a cultural oasis of international importance. Founded in 1986, the Museum has been operated by the Florida International University since 1997.
The collection is housed in a superbly renovated 1927 warehouse, which fits the quirky image of the museum perfectly. Rather than simply display items by time periods or medium, the exhibitions are arranged according to themes; specifically, according to social or political events or issues, creating an interesting way of interpreting the items. To say that the collection is "eclectic" would be an understatement. Where else would you expect to find 8,000 matchbooks that once belonged to Egypt's Kind Farouk? The Museum is located in the heart of Miami Beach within walking distance of area hotels.
