Singapore is a remarkable mix of cultures from around the Pacific Rim and the world. While those who settled the region arrived from many different parts of Asia over the past 2 centuries, the cultures that they brought with them are ancient and diverse. The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) explores those cultures and presents them to today's generation in order to help us understand the rich foundation upon which Singapore has been built.
The collections of the ACM are housed in two separate buildings - at the Empress Place Building at Empress Place and the old Tao Nan School at Armenian Street. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from one museum building to the other. The collection is diverse: Sri Lankan figurine of Buddha, Islamic art and calligraphy, South-east Asian tribal wood carvings and a large number of artifacts from China including jades, ceramics, bronzes and folk art. In fact, nearly two-thirds of the museum focuses on China.
